Tensions between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his vice-president, William Ruto, are rising as Kenya's general elections near. President Kenyatta has asked his Deputy to quit, stating that he has failed to act in the best interests of his country.
General elections are scheduled for August, and 47 candidates have already registered. After two terms, Kenyatta is no longer eligible for re-election, but William Ruto resents him for supporting Raila Odinga, a previous prime minister, instead of him.
Last Friday's public burial for former President Mwai Kibaki sparked the disagreement, with opposition politicians refuse to shake hands knowing they shared the same office together.
Even if he wanted to, the president cannot dismiss his deputy because he can only be removed by impeachment or incapacity.
In this election, inflation has been a key topic. Last Sunday, President Kenyatta announced a 12% rise in the Kenyan minimum wage to compensate for growing living costs.
